For some it's easier and therefore better to upgrade a 4 star to high level rather than a 5 star (which will become a black hole for resources past lvl 60), but you'll always get more stats from the 5 stars. It should also be noted that once you get far enough down the individual orbit trials, you'll be forced to upgrade even minor colors for the single LI because you'll be forced to use only them (RIP Zayne and boss lvl 30 of his orbit; I am unfortunately working on other cards and I can't upgrade two entire teams of his cards for the boss).
