I solved my problem with the lack of additional characters. 
As of now, my squad changes between these dudes based on which quest I'm doing, and I already know two of them will end up in a fuck buddy situationship that will get increasingly complicated. 

I re-solved the problem thanks to the mobile version. 
I am now officially doing the most forever-alone thing a gamer can do: playing co-op from two devices at the same time so I can make my two characters smooch (eventually, I just reached the required level to ask for a partnership today).

P.S. I hate the mobile controls? There are so many things that don't make sense or I can't find, and all the while I'm squinting at everything because the UI is the smallest thing ever.
