It's just... I can just see this. In my head. The instantaneous shift in his eyes as they go flat and hard focused, his half raised hand with fingers starting to spread. That he's half blocked the girlfriend behind him because its more important that he's between her and the danger, than to make sure she's got a good shot.

Sylus would have stepped or swayed to the side. Caleb makes like a wall. i love that for both of them.

And Caleb will always try to be a wall for her. I like that you didn't use the word "shield" because it's too little an object (also can be wielded by hand) for what Caleb wants to be. A wall is canon-compliant to his obsessive need to close MC into a room where she'll be safe from everything and everyone else, the little girl he's desperately trying to see as a woman now, someone who wants to stand by his side rather than hidden behind his back. But instincts die hard <3

well, to stretch even a little bit further, Caleb isn't interested so much at this point in sheltering or shielding our little main character; he's just going to obliterate anything that even looks at her. It's a little more "ground zero" for him since he can't get her to stay put in a little hideaway crib with all the thorns stripped off the roses. So cash money.

...and honestly, Sylus wouldn't really have to step out of the way most of the time anyways as he wouldn't be so crass as to foul her sight line in the first place (doomsday trial battle sequence aside).
