Fangs of Fortune
#1

Saw a few of your posts on tumblr! I hope you're having a great time watching it. I myself decided to check the anime The Apothecary Diaries, and that's where my weekend went in its entirety.

i cannot recommend Fangs of Fortune enough, this is So Fucking Good. it seems to be is a mystery drama set in martial art fantasy land with an original death that started a chain of events, and so far at least, every episode exposes a little more about what happened both at that starting point and also expanding on what you thought you saw in the previous episode (spoiler: you didn't see all of it the first time so your conclusions were understandably faulty).

i am going to watch episode 7 tonight and this i what i got so far about the central mystery:

- a woman died
- a woman who was a goddess died
- a mortal woman who was a goddess died and she released her divine power before death
- a mortal woman who was a goddess died and she released her divine power before death and told it to "find her"
- a mortal woman who was a goddess died and she released her divine power before death and told it to "find her" and the wisp of energy floated off to another woman and was absorbed
- a mortal woman who was a goddess died and she released her divine power before death and told it to "find her" and the wisp of energy floated off, split into two pieces and was absorbed by another woman and a shadowy figure in black.

maybe episode 7 gives us the face of the shadowy man because there are two possibilities that I know of, but I suspect strongly there's a third that has yet to be revealed.

i love this kind of jenga tower of building; pretty much nothing so far is as it seems and every reveal and every new addition is gloriously complicated.

also, Episode 6 made my tears well up and i sniffled. IT WAS SO SAD.

Oh wait I love this concept. Is the main event what you watch every episode, just from different angles and POVs? Or are the new details something you get from exposition and the characters moving about after The Event?

the mysteries are shown sort of in-camera, with more scenes added in.

like, in one episode the Good Boy has been afflicted by an as-yet-explained illness. he's coughing and there's some consternation about it as he's a strong cultivator and should not be ill. The Bad Boy is sitting next to him and being solicitous about it and also kind of a pain in the neck. so Good Boy starts to cough, Bad Boy makes a crack about if he'd known the team carried such weakness, maybe he would have rethought his decision to join them, Good Boy gives him a disbelieving look and then doubles over with a more severe coughing fit.

NEXT episode, Good Boy is glaring at Bad Boy and says he knows Bad Boy has made a deal with the Fish Water Demon they've been tracking/trying to destroy, Bad Boy tries the "oh, little old me?" innocent look and Good Boy produces a fish scale token as evidence. Then there's a quick flash back of the first coughing fit wherein Good Boy notices the scale tucked into Bad Boy's sash, hence the disbelieving look and then the second, more severe coughing fit which gets Good Boy closer/leaning into the Bad Boy and he grabs the scale under the distraction/cover.

so its basically, the camera pulls back a little more each time, showing what you didn't see. A figure lurking in the background. A statement in one episode has a followup in the next. A distracted moment where you don't see what they were distracted by until two episodes later.

its just really well crafted, the visuals are top notch, the writing is very engaging and the characters/acting are A-list. i haven't watched a ton of wuxia/cdrama or anything but its like nothing i've seen before in pretty much every direction.
